Afghan Girl is a pencil sketch of a 1984 photographic portrait by journalist Steve McCurry which was displayed on the cover of National Geographic June 1985. Her real name is Sharbat Gula. As I read up on her life, the pain and suffering she endured is unimaginable. I decided to draw her without blemishes as well give a slight smile, changing the image from the original. This perspective reminds me of how God sees His children. "For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago". Ephesians 2:10 (NLT)
